Willamette Valley: Olympic Trials and Half Marathon
As host to the 2012 U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials on June 21 – July 1, Oregon will figure prominently in the lead up to the world’s marquee sports event of the year: the London 2012 Olympics. Be a part of the Olympic magic – witness heart-pounding sprints to the finish, see hallowed records fall and hang out in the fan fest adjacent to Hayward Field. Several athletes with Oregon ties will put every ounce of effort and energy they have into making the U.S. Olympic team, including decathlete and Bend native Ashton Eaton, one of the favorites to win the gold and the esteemed title of “world’s greatest athlete” in London.
For those who find themselves inspired by the Olympic spirit to run your own race, sign up for the 3rd annual Oregon Wine Country Half Marathon on September 2 in the picturesque Yamhill Valley. You’ll begin your scenic 13.1-mile journey as the sun rises gracefully over Stoller Vineyards in the Dundee Hills, then make your way through the rolling back roads of Oregon’s wine country. Prepare to cross the finish line with a deep sense of satisfaction as the charming town of Carlton welcomes you with a festival offering great Oregon wine, hearty food and live music, not to mention your very own medal!

Central Oregon: Duathlon, Adventure Racing, Cycling
Perhaps no region epitomizes the stunning diversity of sports and recreation in our state like Central Oregon. The summer event season kicks off on June 2 with the Duel in the Desert Duathlon as participants choose between an 18-mile road bike course or a 13-mile mountain bike course to determine whether skinny tires or fat tires are faster. Then on June 30, teams of two or four will navigate through Bend in the fun-filled Oyster Off Road adventure race, combining thought-provoking strategy and creative physical challenges to push the limits in one of nature’s most pristine playgrounds. In August, more than 600 golfers will descend upon Central Oregon for championship-caliber amateur golf at the Pacific Amateur Golf Classic on the region’s finest golf courses.
Bend gets yet another opportunity to show off its passion for cycling when the USA Cycling Masters Road Nationals roll into town in September for five days of intense racing drama. Less than a week later, the USA Cycling Marathon Mountain Bike National Championships will crown 24 national champions who survive a combination of technical and single track racing while climbing toward Mt. Bachelor, then finishing on a fast descent into the historic Old Mill District.

The Gorge: Triathlon, Cycling and Windsurfing
Join world-class triathletes for the second edition of the nationally acclaimed Revolution3 Triathlon on July 8. Start with the swim at Blue Lake, then embark on one of the most scenic cycling routes ever seen in Oregon. You’ll bike your way along the winding back roads at the west end of the Columbia River Gorge before finishing up with the half marathon run on Marine Drive. Not quite ready for the 70.3-mile distance? Don’t worry, there’s a fast, flat Olympic triathlon as well, alongside the Columbia River with Mt. Hood safely in the distance.
The Gorge is of course home to many of the state’s most exhilarating and awe-inspiring events, including the Mt. Hood Cycling Classic and US Windsurfing National Championships. If you’re seeking a challenge, a thrill, or some combination of the two, the Gorge is the place for you!

Southern Oregon: Paragliding, Cycling, Running
Home to some of the most unique terrain in Oregon, it’s no surprise that the southern part of the state produces many of the most unique sports spectacles that Oregon has to offer. The annual Rat Race paragliding competition near Jacksonville fills the sky with a stunning array of colors each June as hundreds of the world’s best paragliding pilots test their mettle on Woodrat Mountain. Further east, the inaugural Tour de Outback cycling event on August 4-5 offers you the chance to leisurely take in the idyllic landscapes of Lake County during two day mountain or road bike tours.
There are many great running events in the region, including the Crater Lake Rim Runs and the recently launched Rogue Run Half Marathon, which allows you to truly soak in the bounty of the region as you run or walk on an asphalt pathway through the entire the course.

The Century Ride of the Centuries on May 26-28 offers multiple biking routes alongside tranquil farms and ranches on the trip from Pendleton to the Blue Mountain foothills and back. In July, those same Blue Mountains entice triathletes to a rugged, off-road experience known as the XTERRA La Grande Offroad Triathlon. And of course in September, thousands will descend on Pendleton for one of Oregon’s signature events, the storied, entertaining and always-lively Pendleton Round-Up.
